Why Berlin

The city UK movers pick when they want space to think

Berlin draws a different mover from Frankfurt. Startups, research institutes, the creative industries and a large freelance population, plus rents that still buy far more room than London does. It is also the German city with the deepest English-speaking layer, so the practical business of arriving is easier here than almost anywhere else in the country.

What that means for the move itself is that people tend to bring more with them and stay longer. We see fewer part-loads to Berlin and more full households, often into large old apartments that need the furniture to be got up there somehow.

A British couple settled in their spacious Berlin Altbau apartment, with the very high ceilings, tall windows and parquet floors typical of the city.

How the move works

UK to Berlin, step by step

After a quick survey — in person or over video — you get a fixed, itemised quote. Then it runs like this.

01

We survey and fix the price

Video walkthrough or an in-person visit. One itemised number covering collection, the crossing, customs and delivery, including the furniture lift and parking permit where your building needs them.

02

We collect, pack and clear customs

Our crew loads at your door. Eurotunnel or ferry, then north through Belgium. Since Brexit you need Transfer of Residence relief and a valued inventory to bring belongings in duty free, and we prepare both so nothing stalls at the border.

03

We deliver into your home

Not to the pavement. We apply for the Halteverbotszone so the lorry can park legally, bring a Moebelaufzug if the stairwell will not take your furniture, and reassemble what we took apart.

A residential Berlin street of tall Altbau apartment buildings with ornate stucco facades and high windows, the kind of upper-floor address that usually needs an external furniture lift on delivery day.

What moving into a Berlin apartment actually involves

The classic Berlin Altbau is generous inside and awkward to get into. Ceilings run to three and a half metres, staircases are wide but turn tightly around a stairwell, and a great many buildings have no lift at all above the fourth floor. Add the Hinterhaus, the rear building reached through a courtyard, and the lorry can end up a long way from the front door. Where the stairs will not take a wardrobe or a sprung mattress we bring a Moebelaufzug and lift it in through the window.

The other half is paperwork on the German side. You cannot simply park a removal lorry outside a Berlin address: we apply to the district office for a Halteverbotszone, a temporary no-parking zone, and the signs must go up with several days notice. Booking late is the most common reason a German delivery date moves. Berlin also runs an Umweltzone covering everything inside the S-Bahn ring, so vehicles need a green Umweltplakette, and our fleet carries one.

What it costs

How much does a removal to Berlin from the UK cost?

A removal from the UK to Berlin typically costs between £750 and £4,800 depending on the volume you are moving, and takes 3-7 days door to door. A shared part-load is the cheapest way to move a smaller home; a dedicated vehicle is faster and suits a full household.

  • Every figure includes loading, the crossing, fuel, tolls and delivery into the room.
  • Access affects the price: a parking permit, a lift booking or an external furniture lift are priced at survey, not added on the day.
  • Transfer of Residence relief means no duty or VAT on your own household goods when you are moving your main home, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

The table above is a guide. Your exact price comes from a free survey.

The cost of a move to Berlin varies with more than the number of rooms. What shapes your price:

  • The size of your home — a studio, a two-bed flat and a four-bed house are very different volumes to move.
  • Access at both ends — stairs, lifts, narrow streets or a long carry all affect the job.
  • Packing — full professional packing, fragile items only, or you pack yourself.
  • Dedicated lorry or shared part-load — the space and timing your move needs.
  • Storage & specialist items — pianos, artwork, or storage either side of the Channel.

Berlin move FAQs

Questions people ask us about this route

How much does a removal from the UK to Berlin cost?
Typically between £750 for a small shared part-load and £4,800 for a large four-bed household. The exact figure depends on volume, access at both ends and whether you take a dedicated vehicle or share one. A free survey gives you one fixed, itemised price.
How long does a removal from the UK to Berlin take?
Four to six days door to door for a dedicated load. Berlin is around 690 miles from London and the drive north through Belgium and across Germany takes the best part of two days with a legal rest break. Part-loads travel on our scheduled German run and can take longer depending on when your collection falls.
Do I need customs paperwork to move to Germany after Brexit?
Yes. If you are moving your main home you will usually qualify for Transfer of Residence relief, which lets you bring belongings in without import duty or VAT, provided you have owned them for at least six months and import them within twelve months of moving. You also need a detailed valued inventory. We prepare both with you.
Do you arrange the Halteverbotszone parking permit?
Yes. There is no right to park a removal lorry on a Berlin street, so we apply to the district office for a temporary no-parking zone and have the signs put up in advance. It needs several days notice, so the earlier your date is fixed the better.
My Berlin flat is on the fifth floor with no lift. Is that a problem?
It is common and we plan for it. Above the third or fourth floor in an Altbau we normally quote for a Moebelaufzug, an external furniture lift that takes items in through the window, rather than carrying a wardrobe up five flights. We assess it at survey so it is priced in, not added on the day.
Will you need to register my address for me?
No, the Anmeldung is something you do yourself at the Buergeramt, normally within fourteen days of arriving, and you will need it before you can open a bank account or set up utilities. We can deliver before you have completed it.
