Why Antwerp

A working port city with an unusual amount of style

Antwerp is a commercial move rather than an institutional one. Europe's second-largest port, the chemical cluster around it, the diamond trade and a genuinely serious fashion and design sector between them bring in a steady flow of UK arrivals, most of them work-led and many of them long-term. It is a markedly cheaper place to live than Brussels and considerably cheaper than Amsterdam, which is why people who could work in either often end up here.

It is a Flemish city, so the working language is Dutch rather than French, and the paperwork that surrounds a move follows suit. That is worth knowing if you have moved within Belgium before and are expecting the Brussels process.

Antwerp — everyday life

How the move works

UK to Antwerp, step by step

After a quick survey — in person or over video — you get a fixed, itemised quote. Then it runs like this.

01

We survey and fix the price

Video walkthrough or an in-person visit. One itemised number covering collection, the crossing, customs and delivery, including the external lift and the parking reservation where your address needs them.

02

We collect, pack and clear customs

Our crew loads at your door. Eurotunnel or ferry, then a short run up from Calais. Since Brexit you need Transfer of Residence relief and a valued inventory, and we prepare both so nothing stalls at the border.

03

We deliver into your home

Not to the pavement. We arrange the parking reservation, bring a meubellift where the staircase will not take your furniture, and reassemble what we took apart.

What moving into Antwerp actually involves

The old centre inside the ring is tight. Tall narrow gabled houses with steep, turning staircases, cobbled and often one-way streets, and a good deal of it pedestrianised or access-restricted at certain hours. As in the Dutch cities, furniture for the upper floors usually goes through the window on a meubellift rather than up the stairs, and we assess for that at survey. We also apply for the temporary parking reservation that holds kerb space, because on many of those streets there is simply nowhere for a lorry to stand otherwise.

Antwerp operates a strict low-emission zone across the centre with automatic number-plate enforcement, and non-compliant vehicles are fined rather than turned away, so this is one to get right rather than risk. Our fleet is registered and compliant. Out in Berchem, Wilrijk, Deurne and the southern suburbs the housing is more spacious, streets are wider and it becomes an ordinary house move.

What it costs

How much does a removal to Antwerp from the UK cost?

A removal from the UK to Antwerp typically costs between £650 and £4,200 depending on the volume you are moving, and takes 2 to 5 days door to door. A shared part-load is the cheapest way to move a smaller home; a dedicated vehicle is faster and suits a full household.

  • Every figure includes loading, the Channel crossing, fuel, tolls and delivery into the room.
  • Access affects the price: a parking reservation from the commune, a lift booking or an external furniture lift are priced at survey, not added on the day.
  • Transfer of Residence relief means no duty or VAT on your own household goods when you are moving your main home, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

The table above is a guide. Your exact price comes from a free survey.

The cost of a move to Antwerp varies with more than the number of rooms. What shapes your price:

  • The size of your home — a studio, a two-bed flat and a four-bed house are very different volumes to move.
  • Access at both ends — stairs, lifts, narrow streets or a long carry all affect the job.
  • Packing — full professional packing, fragile items only, or you pack yourself.
  • Dedicated lorry or shared part-load — the space and timing your move needs.
  • Storage & specialist items — pianos, artwork, or storage either side of the Channel.

Antwerp move FAQs

Questions people ask us about this route

How much does a removal from the UK to Antwerp cost?
Typically between £650 for a small shared part-load and £4,200 for a large four-bed household, taking 2 to 5 days door to door. The exact figure depends on volume, access at both ends and whether you take a dedicated vehicle or share one. A free survey gives you one fixed, itemised price.
How long does a removal from the UK to Antwerp take?
Two to three days door to door for a dedicated load. Antwerp is around 230 miles from London and a short drive up from Calais, so the transit is one of the quickest we run. Part-loads travel on our weekly Belgium service.
Do I need customs paperwork to move to Belgium after Brexit?
Yes. Moving your main home usually qualifies for Transfer of Residence relief, removing import duty and VAT, provided the goods have been owned six months and are imported within twelve months of the move. A valued inventory is required. We prepare both with you.
Is the Antwerp low-emission zone a problem for a removal lorry?
Not for ours. Antwerp runs a strict LEZ across the centre with automatic number-plate enforcement, and non-compliant vehicles are fined rather than stopped, so it has to be got right in advance. Our vehicles are registered and compliant.
Can you deliver into a narrow house in the old centre?
Yes. The gabled houses inside the ring have steep, tightly turning staircases, so upper-floor furniture normally goes in through the window on an external meubellift. We assess access beforehand and reserve kerb space, since many of those streets are one-way or restricted.
Do you also deliver to the suburbs?
Yes, and they are considerably easier. Berchem, Wilrijk, Deurne and the southern suburbs have wider streets, more parking and more conventional houses, so a full-size lorry can usually get to the door.
