Why Tuscany

A region, not a town, and that changes how the move is planned

Tuscany is the single most requested destination on our Italian service, and almost none of it is a city delivery. British buyers settle across a wide spread of the region: the hills south of Florence and through Chianti, the walled towns of Lucca and Cortona, the Val d Orcia and the countryside around Siena, Arezzo and the Casentino, and the coastal strip of Versilia. Each of those is a different job.

What they share is that the property is usually older than anything the buyer has moved out of, and the last half mile is usually the hardest part of the entire route. A restored podere or casale sits at the end of a private track, behind a gateway built for a cart, with a turning circle that a forty-foot vehicle simply does not have. That is a solvable problem, but only if it is known before the lorry leaves the UK.

How the move works

UK to Tuscany, step by step

After a quick survey — in person or over video — you get a fixed, itemised quote. Then it runs like this.

01

We survey the home and the approach

Video walkthrough of the property, and separately of the access: the lane, the gateway, the turning space and the surface. We ask for a pinned location rather than a postal address, because rural Tuscan satnav is unreliable. One itemised price covering collection, the road route, customs and delivery.

02

We collect, pack and clear customs

Our crew packs and loads at your door in the UK. Channel crossing, then down through France and over the Alps into Italy. Since Brexit this is a formal import: Transfer of Residence relief, a valued inventory and an Italian codice fiscale. We prepare the paperwork so nothing is held at the border.

03

We deliver, including the last mile

Where the main vehicle cannot reach the house we transfer the load to a smaller truck or van and shuttle it in. Where a hill town centre is restricted we hold the ZTL permit before the day. We carry in, place and reassemble.

The last half mile is the job in Tuscany

Most Tuscan country properties are reached by a strada bianca, an unmade white gravel road, often single track, frequently with a blind hairpin and a drop on one side. Dry stone walls and mature cypress leave no margin. After rain the surface softens and a fully laden articulated lorry will sink or lose traction on the climb. We plan for a transfer vehicle as standard on rural deliveries rather than treating it as an exception, and we price it in at survey.

The gateway is the other recurring obstacle. Original farm entrances were built for a tractor and a trailer, not a removals lorry, and stone gateposts do not move. Overhanging branches and low telephone lines catch out anyone who measured only the width. Send us photographs or a short video of the lane, the gateway and the space in front of the house, and pin the exact location on a map.

In the towns the constraint is different. Florence, Siena, Lucca, Cortona, San Gimignano and every other historic centre operate a ZTL, a limited traffic zone enforced by camera, with permits issued by the individual comune and often restricted to particular hours. Driving in without one is an automatic fine per pass, and there are frequently several cameras. We apply to the right comune in advance and work inside the permitted window.

What it costs

How much does a removal to Tuscany from the UK cost?

A removal from the UK to Tuscany typically costs between £900 and £5,500 depending on the volume you are moving, and takes 5-9 days door to door. A shared part-load is the cheapest way to move a smaller home; a dedicated vehicle is faster and suits a full household.

Move sizeVolumeTypical costDoor-to-door
Part load5-10 m³£900 - £1,4505-9 days

4-bed home or larger50-65 m³£3,800 - £5,5004-7 days
  • Every figure includes loading, the crossing, fuel, tolls and delivery into the room.
  • Access affects the price: a parking permit, a lift booking or an external furniture lift are priced at survey, not added on the day.
  • Transfer of Residence relief means no duty or VAT on your own household goods when you are moving your main home, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

The table above is a guide. Your exact price comes from a free survey.

The cost of a move to Tuscany varies with more than the number of rooms. What shapes your price:

  • The size of your home — a studio, a two-bed flat and a four-bed house are very different volumes to move.
  • Access at both ends — stairs, lifts, narrow streets or a long carry all affect the job.
  • Packing — full professional packing, fragile items only, or you pack yourself.
  • Dedicated lorry or shared part-load — the space and timing your move needs.
  • Storage & specialist items — pianos, artwork, or storage either side of the Channel.

Tell us a little about your move and we will come back with a clear, itemised quote.

Tuscany move FAQs

Questions people ask us about this route

How much does a removal from the UK to Tuscany cost?
Typically between £900 for a small shared part-load and £5,500 for a large four-bed household. The exact figure depends on volume, access at both ends and whether you take a dedicated vehicle or share one. A free survey gives you one fixed, itemised price.
How long does a removal from the UK to Tuscany take?
Four to seven days door to door for a dedicated load. It is roughly 950 miles by road from London, through France and over the Alps. Part-loads travel on our scheduled Italian run, which departs monthly, so the delivery window is a little wider.
Can a removals lorry reach a Tuscan farmhouse?
Often not all the way. Most rural properties are on an unmade single-track lane with tight gateways and no turning space, and the surface will not carry a fully laden articulated vehicle after rain. We plan a transfer to a smaller truck or van as standard and shuttle the load in. It is assessed at survey and included in the price, not added on the day.
What do I need to send you before you can quote accurately?
Photographs or a short video of three things: the lane approaching the property, the gateway itself, and the space in front of the house where a vehicle would stand. A pinned map location helps too, because rural addresses in Tuscany are frequently wrong on satnav. That is what separates a firm price from an estimate.
What is a ZTL and does it affect my delivery?
A ZTL is a limited traffic zone covering the historic centre of almost every Tuscan town, including Florence, Siena, Lucca and Cortona. It is camera enforced, permits come from the individual comune, and access is often restricted to set hours. If your address is inside one we obtain the permit in advance and deliver within the window.
What customs paperwork do I need to move to Italy?
Since Brexit this is a formal import. Moving your main home normally qualifies for Transfer of Residence relief, so no duty or VAT, provided you have owned the goods for at least six months and import them within twelve months. You will need an Italian codice fiscale and a detailed valued inventory. Furnishing a holiday home is not a transfer of residence and is treated differently, so tell us which it is.
Can you move a part load to Tuscany?
Yes, and on a route this long it is usually the sensible option for anything under a full household. You pay for the space you use rather than a whole vehicle. It suits second homes and staged moves where furniture goes out ahead of you.
