The difference

What makes an international house move different

A domestic removal is a logistics job. An international one is a logistics job wrapped in a customs declaration, and the customs half is where moves actually go wrong. Since Brexit, taking your own furniture to France or Spain is a formal import. It needs Transfer of Residence relief, a detailed valued inventory and proof of your new address, and none of it can be arranged on the morning the lorry arrives.

The second difference is access. British houses are broadly similar to each other. European properties are not: a Haussmann apartment in Paris, a fifth-floor Altbau in Berlin with no lift, a canal house in Amsterdam that loads through the window on a hoisting beam, a Tuscan farmhouse at the end of a single-track lane. Each needs a different vehicle, a different crew size and sometimes an external furniture lift, and all of that has to be decided before we quote rather than after. We survey the property and the access at both ends, then give you one itemised figure that already includes the lift, the permit and the paperwork.

How it works

How a move to Europe works

After a quick survey — in person or over video — you get a fixed, itemised quote. Then it runs like this.

01

Survey and fixed price

A video walkthrough or a visit. We measure the volume, check the access and confirm whether a dedicated vehicle or a part-load suits you. One itemised figure follows.

02

Paperwork prepared

We build the valued inventory and the Transfer of Residence file with you, well before the date, so nothing is waiting on a document.

03

Pack, load and cross

Our crew packs and loads at your door. Eurotunnel or ferry depending on where you are going, then a planned route with the driver rest built in.

04

Delivery and reassembly

We carry in, place and reassemble. Where the stairwell will not take a piece, the external lift is already booked because we knew at survey.

What a full house removal includes

Full service

Pre-move survey

By video walkthrough or in person, covering the goods and the access at both ends.

Professional packing

Materials included, or supplies delivered if you would rather pack yourself.

Dismantling and reassembly

Of beds, wardrobes and flat-pack furniture.

Loading and secure transit

On our own vehicles, not a subcontracted broker network.

Transfer of Residence relief

The valued inventory prepared and submitted with you.

External furniture lift and permits

Where the destination building needs them.

Delivery into the room

Not to the pavement.

Storage either side of the Channel

If your completion dates do not line up.

Every quote is built around your home, not a price list.

There is no honest flat rate, because two homes of the same size in different buildings are different jobs. Five things set the figure.

  • Volume — of your belongings in cubic metres, which is what the survey measures.
  • Access at both ends — including floor, lift, stairwell width, parking and whether a furniture lift is needed.
  • Packing — from full professional packing to fragile items only to none at all.
  • Dedicated vehicle or shared part-load — usually the largest single lever on price.
  • Season — since July and August are the busiest weeks in Europe and book out early.

Tell us a little about your move and we will come back with a clear, itemised quote.

Common questions

International house removals: common questions

How much does an international house removal cost?
It depends on volume, access, packing, whether you take a dedicated vehicle or share one, and the time of year. Published prices with volumes and transit times for the shortest mainland route are on our removals to Paris page.
Do I have to pay import duty on my own furniture?
Normally no. Moving your main home to an EU country usually qualifies for Transfer of Residence relief, so no duty or VAT, provided you have owned and used the goods for at least six months and import them within twelve months of moving.
How long does a house move to Europe take?
Two to four days to Paris and northern France, three to five to Lyon, central France and Germany, three to six to the south of France, Spain and Italy, and six to ten to Portugal.
What if my furniture will not fit up the stairs?
Common in European city apartments, solved with a monte-meubles, an external furniture lift that takes the load in through a window. We identify the need at survey.
Can you store my things if the dates do not line up?
Yes. UK and continental completion dates rarely match, so we hold goods in the UK before departure or near the destination after arrival, for as long as you need.
Do you move a part household or just a few rooms?
Yes. A part-load shares the vehicle with other customers going the same way and you pay for the space you occupy.
