The UK to Europe removals specialists
We move household goods and business contents from anywhere in the UK to destinations across France and Europe. Collection to door-to-door delivery, with packing available if you want it and storage on either side of the Channel if your move dates don’t line up.
For fragile or high-value pieces, we crate and palletise to freight standard. Goods-in-transit insurance is included on every move as standard, not as an add-on.
Operator licensing
Ask for the O-licence before you book any removals company
Any business running goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to carry other people’s belongings must hold a goods vehicle operator’s licence, known as an O-licence, granted by the Traffic Commissioner. It is not a trade badge or a membership someone pays to display. It is the legal permission to put that lorry on the road with your furniture inside it.
Operators have to prove they are financially standing, of good repute, have a qualified transport manager and maintain their vehicles to a set standard. That is the whole point of it: the licence is the reason a stranger’s lorry is a reasonable place to put everything you own.
It is also the single easiest thing to check, and almost nobody moving abroad knows to ask.
An unlicensed vehicle can be impounded — with your possessions still in it
If the DVSA stops a goods vehicle that is operating without the correct licence, it can be seized and impounded. Your belongings do not travel on without it. They are inside.
Getting them back is a formal application to the Traffic Commissioner, made by the operator, not by you — and you are the one with a completion date, a flight booked and an empty house at the other end.
So before you accept any quote, ask the company for its O-licence number and check it on the public register. It takes a minute, and it is the difference between a cheap quote and a real one.
The three types
Which licence a UK to Europe removal actually requires
- Restricted licenceFor a business carrying only its own goods as part of its trade — a builder moving their own tools and materials, for instance. Does not permit carrying your household goods for payment.
- Standard national licenceFor carrying other people’s goods for hire or reward, but only within Great Britain. Does not permit taking your goods to France, Spain or anywhere else in Europe.
- Standard international licenceFor carrying other people’s goods for hire or reward, and your own goods, internationally across Europe. This is the only one of the three that lawfully covers a UK to Europe household removal — and it is the licence we hold.
