Why Porto

Cheaper than Lisbon, and increasingly the first choice

Porto has quietly become the alternative for people who looked at Lisbon and found it had already been discovered. Property costs less, the city is smaller and easier to live in, and the technology and services sector has grown fast enough to make it a genuine career move rather than only a lifestyle one. The wine trade has kept an Anglo-Portuguese connection here for three centuries, so a British presence is nothing new.

It is also marginally closer than Lisbon, and the direct ferry to northern Spain lands you far nearer to Porto than to the south, which shortens the road leg noticeably.

How the move works

UK to Porto, step by step

After a quick survey — in person or over video — you get a fixed, itemised quote. Then it runs like this.

01

We survey and fix the price

Video walkthrough or an in-person visit. One itemised number covering collection, the crossing, customs and delivery, including the external lift and any shuttle vehicle your street needs.

02

We collect, pack and clear customs

Our crew loads at your door. We can run down through France and Spain or take the direct ferry to northern Spain and cut a day off the road. Since Brexit you need Transfer of Residence relief, a Portuguese NIF and an inventory, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

03

We deliver into your home

Not to the end of the street. We arrange the parking permit, bring a lift where the stairs will not take your furniture, and shuttle in with a smaller van where a lorry simply cannot reach.

What moving into Porto actually involves

Porto is built on a granite gorge above the Douro and the old city climbs it in tight terraces. The Ribeira and the streets running up from it are narrow, steep and cobbled, with tall thin houses of four or five storeys and staircases to match. As in Lisbon, a full-size lorry frequently cannot get to the door in the historic centre, so we shuttle in with a smaller vehicle from the nearest legal standing point, and furniture for the upper floors normally goes in through the window on an external lift.

Two things make Porto slightly kinder than Lisbon. The historic core is more compact, so shuttle runs are shorter, and a great deal of the newer housing sits on flatter ground in Boavista, Foz and out towards Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia, where streets are wide and buildings have proper lifts. We apply for the municipal parking reservation wherever the street needs it.

What it costs

How much does a removal to Porto from the UK cost?

A removal from the UK to Porto typically costs between £950 and £5,900 depending on the volume you are moving, and takes 6-10 days door to door. A shared part-load is the cheapest way to move a smaller home; a dedicated vehicle is faster and suits a full household.

  • Every figure includes loading, the crossing, fuel, tolls and delivery into the room.
  • Access affects the price: a parking permit, a lift booking or an external furniture lift are priced at survey, not added on the day.
  • Transfer of Residence relief means no duty or VAT on your own household goods when you are moving your main home, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

The table above is a guide. Your exact price comes from a free survey.

The cost of a move to Porto varies with more than the number of rooms. What shapes your price:

  • The size of your home — a studio, a two-bed flat and a four-bed house are very different volumes to move.
  • Access at both ends — stairs, lifts, narrow streets or a long carry all affect the job.
  • Packing — full professional packing, fragile items only, or you pack yourself.
  • Dedicated lorry or shared part-load — the space and timing your move needs.
  • Storage & specialist items — pianos, artwork, or storage either side of the Channel.

Porto move FAQs

Questions people ask us about this route

How much does a removal from the UK to Porto cost?
Typically between £950 for a small shared part-load and £5,900 for a large four-bed household. The exact figure depends on volume, access at both ends and whether you take a dedicated vehicle or share one. A free survey gives you one fixed, itemised price.
How long does a removal from the UK to Porto take?
Six to nine days door to door. Porto is around 1,250 miles from London. The direct ferry to northern Spain lands closer to Porto than to Lisbon, which shortens the road leg. Part-loads travel on our monthly Portugal service.
Do I need customs paperwork to move to Portugal after Brexit?
Yes. Moving your main home usually qualifies for Transfer of Residence relief, removing import duty and VAT, but you will also need a Portuguese NIF tax number, proof of your address and an itemised inventory. Apply for the NIF early, as little else can proceed without it.
Can a lorry reach my flat in the Ribeira?
Often not. The streets climbing from the river are narrow, steep and cobbled. We stand the lorry at the nearest legal point and shuttle in with a smaller van, and take upper-floor furniture through the window on an external lift. It is assessed at survey and priced in.
Is Porto easier to deliver into than Lisbon?
Slightly, yes. The historic core is more compact so shuttle runs are shorter, and much of the modern housing in Boavista, Foz and Vila Nova de Gaia sits on flatter ground with wide streets and proper lifts.
Can you move a part load to Porto?
Yes, and on a route this long it is usually the sensible choice for anything under a full household. You pay for the space you use on our scheduled Portugal run rather than for a whole vehicle.
