Why the Algarve

Britain's longest-established community in Portugal

The Algarve has been receiving British movers for fifty years, and it shows in the practicalities: English-speaking solicitors, estate agents, doctors and tradesmen are everywhere, and the process of arriving is smoother here than anywhere else in the country. The coast divides roughly into the busier central stretch around Albufeira, Vilamoura and Quarteira, the quieter and prettier west around Lagos and Carvoeiro, and the older, more Portuguese east around Tavira and Olhao.

The moves themselves split into two kinds. Full retirements bringing an entire household, and second homes being furnished a few rooms at a time. The second sort is why our part-load service matters so much on this route: paying for a whole lorry to carry a bedroom and a terrace set makes no sense.

How the move works

UK to the Algarve, step by step

After a quick survey — in person or over video — you get a fixed, itemised quote. Then it runs like this.

01

We survey and fix the price

Video walkthrough or an in-person visit. One itemised number covering collection, the crossing, customs and delivery, including any shuttle vehicle or resort access your property needs.

02

We collect, pack and clear customs

Our crew loads at your door. We can run down through France and Spain or take the direct ferry to northern Spain and cut a day off the road. Since Brexit you need Transfer of Residence relief, a Portuguese NIF and an inventory, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

03

We deliver into your home

Not to the end of the track. We clear resort security in advance where it applies, and where the final approach is too tight for a lorry we shuttle in with a smaller van.

What moving into an Algarve property actually involves

Once the lorry arrives this is among the most straightforward deliveries on our network. Most Algarve property is single or two-storey villa and apartment stock built since the 1970s, with driveways, hard standing and space to work, and the crew can usually reach the door directly. There is no equivalent of the Lisbon hill problem here.

The wrinkles are of a different kind. Gated resorts and condominiums, Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago among them, control access at the barrier and require the vehicle, the crew and the delivery window to be registered with the administrator beforehand; turning up unannounced means sitting at the gate. Some condominiums also restrict deliveries during peak summer weeks. And the old centres of Tavira, Lagos and Olhao have narrow one-way lanes where we shuttle in with a small van, which is the exception rather than the rule here.

What it costs

How much does a removal to the Algarve from the UK cost?

A removal from the UK to the Algarve typically costs between £950 and £5,900 depending on the volume you are moving, and takes 6-10 days door to door. A shared part-load is the cheapest way to move a smaller home; a dedicated vehicle is faster and suits a full household.

  • Every figure includes loading, the crossing, fuel, tolls and delivery into the room.
  • Access affects the price: a parking permit, a lift booking or an external furniture lift are priced at survey, not added on the day.
  • Transfer of Residence relief means no duty or VAT on your own household goods when you are moving your main home, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

The table above is a guide. Your exact price comes from a free survey.

The cost of a move to the Algarve varies with more than the number of rooms. What shapes your price:

  • The size of your home — a studio, a two-bed flat and a four-bed house are very different volumes to move.
  • Access at both ends — stairs, lifts, narrow streets or a long carry all affect the job.
  • Packing — full professional packing, fragile items only, or you pack yourself.
  • Dedicated lorry or shared part-load — the space and timing your move needs.
  • Storage & specialist items — pianos, artwork, or storage either side of the Channel.

the Algarve move FAQs

Questions people ask us about this route

How much does a removal from the UK to the Algarve cost?
Typically between £950 for a small shared part-load and £5,900 for a large four-bed household. The exact figure depends on volume, access at both ends and whether you take a dedicated vehicle or share one. A free survey gives you one fixed, itemised price.
How long does a removal from the UK to the Algarve take?
Seven to ten days door to door. The Algarve is around 1,500 miles from London, the longest route we run, down through France and Spain. Part-loads travel on our monthly Portugal service, so timing depends on the next departure.
Do I need customs paperwork to move to Portugal after Brexit?
Yes. Relocating your main home normally qualifies for Transfer of Residence relief, so no import duty or VAT. Portugal also requires a NIF tax number, proof of your Portuguese address and an itemised inventory. Apply for the NIF early, because almost nothing else can proceed without it. Note that a holiday home you are furnishing is not a transfer of residence and is treated differently, so tell us which it is.
Can you deliver into a gated resort like Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago?
Yes, but it has to be arranged in advance. The administrator needs the vehicle details, the crew and the delivery window registered before the day, and some condominiums restrict deliveries in peak summer weeks. We handle that registration as part of the job.
Which Algarve towns do you cover?
All of them. Faro, Lagos, Tavira, Albufeira, Portimao, Loule, Vilamoura, Carvoeiro, Olhao, Quarteira and the villages between and inland. The run is the same; only the final approach changes.
I am only furnishing a holiday home. Can you take a few rooms?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do here. A shared part-load on our scheduled Portugal run means you pay for the space you use instead of a whole vehicle.
