What they have in common is that the move is rarely permanent in the way a move to the Dordogne is, and the Eurostar at two hours and twenty minutes from St Pancras to Gare du Nord is the reason why.

Not to the pavement. We arrange the street permit, bring the lift if the staircase will not take your sofa, and reassemble what we took apart. Most Paris moves complete within two to four days of departure.
What moving into a Paris apartment actually involves
Paris is the hardest delivery city we serve, and it has almost nothing to do with distance. The classic Haussmann building has a stone spiral staircase that narrows as it climbs and a lift that was retrofitted into the stairwell void, which often means it takes two people and a suitcase and nothing more. A three-seat sofa, a sprung mattress or a wardrobe frequently will not go up either. The answer is a monte-meubles, the external furniture lift you see hoisting furniture through Parisian windows, and on upper-floor moves we plan for one from the start rather than discovering the problem on the day.
Parking is the other half of it. There is no assumed right to stop a lorry outside a Paris address, so we apply to the Mairie for a temporary occupation permit for the bay and, where a lift is being sited, the pavement too. That application takes advance notice, which is the single most common reason a Paris delivery date slips when it is booked late. Add the low-emission zone inside the A86, where vehicles carry a Crit Air sticker, and the medieval street pattern in the Marais, the Latin Quarter and up the hill in Montmartre where cobbles and a gradient rule out a full-size lorry entirely and we shuttle in with a smaller van. Out in Neuilly, Boulogne-Billancourt, Levallois and towards Versailles it is a far more ordinary house move.
