MOVING DAY GUIDE

What to expect on moving day: UK to France

An international moving day runs differently from a domestic one. Here’s what happens from the moment the lorry arrives at your UK door to when the last box goes into your French home.

Collection day (UK)

The crew arrives at the agreed time — we call the evening before to confirm. First task is a walk-through of the property to confirm what’s going and what’s staying. Any items not on the inventory get flagged before they’re loaded, not after. The inventory is signed by you and the crew leader before loading begins.

Loading typically takes 3–8 hours depending on volume and access. Furniture is disassembled where needed (beds, wardrobes, large sofas), wrapped in transit blankets, and loaded methodically — heavy items at the lorry floor level, lighter and fragile items on top and near the cab.

Once loaded, you receive a copy of the inventory and the vehicle tracking details. The vehicle then proceeds to the Channel crossing.

The crossing and customs

Our customs declaration and Transfer of Residence application are lodged before the vehicle boards. At the French side, the customs officer checks the manifest against the declaration. For correctly documented moves this is routine and quick. If anything on the lorry isn’t on the inventory, it gets held separately for inspection — which is why the inventory is done properly before departure, not approximated.

Delivery day (France)

We call the day before delivery to confirm the time window. At your French property, the crew does a second walk-through to understand the layout before anything comes off the lorry — where each room is, where the furniture goes, which items need reassembly.

Items are checked against the inventory as they come off. If anything is damaged in transit (rare, but it happens), it gets noted on the delivery paperwork before you sign. This is important for any insurance claim — damage noted on delivery paperwork is covered; damage reported two weeks later is much harder to process.

Furniture is reassembled, boxes are placed in the right rooms, and you do a final walk-through with the crew leader before signing the delivery note. That’s the move done.
